Sophie

Some of you may know that by day I am a yoga instructor and by night I am an  undercover agent for some of my artistic friends. I have worked  with Trio Cappuccino for a few years (a lovely  local musical trio)  and I recently signed on (in my own mind) to represent 23 year old Sophie Creelman who grew up in Haliburton and is opening her first art show today at the  Baked and Battered Cafe.  Sophie attended Haliburton High School (I love to hear the stories of our graduates and where they go from here) and then went on to study and learn about art, photography,  printing and computers  and she is on fire.  Her high school art teachers need to come and see her work!  It  is just so interesting. The detail in her work boggles my mind.  I am so curious about how the mind works to create what she does.   The 3 big pieces that  she has chosen to put up at B&B are from her series called Views – City Series.  Sophie traveled to the top of the Eiffel tower, took some time to look around and then took a picture and captured a “a moment in time”  of that city.  She then came home and painted with acrylics on a 48 by 36 (it’s big!!!) canvas from the picture.  She then did the same when she traveled to Montreal and climbed Mont Royal.  She repeated the task when she went up the CN town and is currently working on a series about Toronto.   On her website sophiecreelman.com she provides detailed information about why she is  choosing to do these cities and her desire to “capture a moment in time”  without getting caught up in being perfect.  She loves architecture and “appreciating the details of a building that eventually make up a city.”  Sophie also does beautiful minimal and abstract work  which she says “makes up the more calming aspects of her painting practice.”  Sophie is  a beautiful photographer and is making her own series of cards which she sells through her Haliburton based print shop called called White River Co which can be found on facebook.   What I love about this story is that we all celebrate when our local young people are thriving.   I always want to give a shout out to the High School and the parents!  And I also love that Baked and Battered continues to support artists from our county and from afar by showcasing their work in the café.  Everyone wins.  Sophie will also have work on display at our own Rails End Gallery so you can check her out there as well.  One of my intentions for 2017 is to make more time for art in my life.  And I just can’t help but be inspired by this upcoming young artist. Congratulations Sophie.
